Not all, but most, scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence or in some other cases, on the basis of artistic, or athletic merits. Below is a list of the popular merit-based scholarships.

MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS

Fulbright Foreign Program (USA)

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is one that offers international students prestigious scholarships to pursue a Master’s or PhD in any University in the United States or some other recognised university outside the US for a period of one year or even longer. This grant usually covers the tuition fee, airfare, stipend for living expenses and health insurance of the student for the duration of his or her study.

British Chevening Scholarships (UK)

The Chevening Scholarships are a part of the UK government’s international scholarship programme. They are awarded to highly talented scholars who also have a proven track record in leadership. These awards are usually for one-year Master’s programmes. They cover tuition fees, living allowance for the awardee, an economy-class return air ticket to the UK and other grants that cover other expenditure relevant to the student for the period of his study in the UK.

  • Deadline: November 7 (annually)
  • Subject area: Full-time taught Master’s programme in any subject area
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Approximately 1,500 scholarships are offered to international students
  • Award Value: The Chevening Scholarship often covers the cost of tuition, travel fare to UK and back to the applicant’s home country, monthly stipend for living allowance, visa costs, a travel grant to Chevening events held in the UK as well as an arrival and a homeward departure allowance.
  • Eligibility: Want to apply for the Chevening Scholarship this year? Then you must:
  1. Be a citizen of a country that is Chevening-eligible
  2. Show your intention to return to your country of citizenship for at least 2 years after your scholarship is over.
  3. Have a Bachelor’s degree (usually a 2:1) that can grant you acceptance to pursue a postgraduate degree at a UK university.
  4. Have a minimum of 2 years’ work experience
  5. Apply to 3 of the participating UK universities for a programme with an unconditional offer from one of them by July 12.
  6. Meet the Chevening English Language proficiency requirement by July 12.

Endeavour Postgraduate Awards (Australia)

What makes this scholarship attractive is that it offers full financial support to prospective international students who would like to obtain an MSc or PhD in a research or coursework programme in Australia. The scholarship awards can fund MSc programmes with up to 2 years of study and PhD programmes with up to 4 years of study. These scholarships include travel allowance, tuition fees, establishment allowance, health insurance and monthly stipend.

  • Award Value: The value of the scholarship is up to $140,500 for Master’s Programmes and $272,500 for PhD Programmes. This value would also include a travel allowance of $AUD 3,000, an establishment allowance of $AUD 4,000 and a monthly stipend of $AUD 3,000 till the programme is over. Scholars are also entitled to grants for the full cost of tuition including amenities and student service fees till the programme ends.

Master’s programmes last for 2 years while PhD programmes may take 4 years.

The applicant must also meet the following requirements:

  1. Applicant must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the programme
  2. The proposed programme must start between January and November and not later. Those who are already enrolled at the time of the scholarship application or will be enrolled before the time frame are not eligible to apply.
  3. All supporting documents that are relevant to the scholarship application must be submitted
  4. Applicant must not have held or completed a directly-administered Australian Government scholarship
  5. He or she is also not allowed to apply in a category he or she has previously owned a scholarship or fellowship.
  • Application Instructions: One other thing applicants must do is to attach a formal letter of admission from their proposed university in Australia. A conditional offer is also acceptable. All applications must be submitted via the Endeavour Online (EOL) system by 11:59 pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) of June 30.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Canada)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) is an initiative of the Canadian government to position Canada as a world-renowned centre of excellence in higher learning and research. Through this program world-class doctoral students are attracted and retained in participating Canadian universities. This scholarship is valued at $50,000 each year for 3 years.

  • Participating Institutions: Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation.
  • Programme(s): PhD Degree
  • Deadline: November 1 (Annually)
  • Subject area: PhD or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD programmes in, natural sciences and/or engineering research, health research, and social sciences and/or humanities research.
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Approximately 167 scholarships are awarded every year
  • Award Value: The scholarship has a value of $50,000 which is given to the scholar every year for 3 years.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must:
  • Be nominated by just one Canadian institution that has be given a Vanier CGS quota
  • Be pursuing a doctoral or combined graduate degree for the first time. For those who will be enrolling for combined programmes, the award will be for the PhD part of the combination.
  • Have the intentions to pursue the programme by summer or in the academic year after the announcement of results
  • Have earned a first-class average in each year of the last 2 years of a full-time study. Applicants are also advised to get in touch with their nominating institutions for information on the institution’s definition of a first-class
  • Not hold, or have held at any time, a doctoral fellowship or scholarship from NSER, CIHR, OR SSHRC to pursue a doctoral degree.
  • Application Instructions: Candidates cannot apply to Vanier CGS program directly but have to be nominated by a Canadian university that has a quota. The student can contact the participating university to apply or the participating university may begin the nomination process by reaching out to its desired student.

By using the ResearchNet application system, applicants complete the application and send it to the nominating institution. It’s the institution that will then send the application to the Vanier-Banting secretariat by November 1.

Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme (France)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in France developed this scholarship as a medium to attract highly talented foreign students to enrol for Master’s and PhD programmes at its higher education institutions. Awardees of the Eiffel scholarships receive allowance for living expenses, social security cover, a return trip to their home country, and other expenses. However, this scholarship does not include the cost of tuition fees.

  • Participating Institutions: Universities and academic institutions in France
  • Programme(s): Masters or PhD Degree
  • Deadline: November to January 6 (Annually)
  • Subject area: The 3 main fields that are eligible for Master’s degree or PhD degree programmes are: engineering science for Master’s (with a broad sense of it at the PhD level), law and political sciences and economics and management.
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Not specified
  • Award Value: Awardees for Master’s programmes are entitled to a scholarship that includes a monthly allowance split into a maintenance allowance of €1,031 and a stipend of €150; which may be awarded for 12 to 36 months. At the PhD level, the scholarship includes a monthly stipend of €1,400 for up to 10 months.

The award may also cover certain expenses like a return trip, cultural activities, and a cover for social security. It is also likely that awardees will also receive housing allowance as well.

  • Eligibility:

Age: Applicants for Master’s courses must 30 years or younger while PhD applicants must be 35 or younger by March 6.

Nationality: Candidates must not be of French nationality. Candidates with dual citizenship where France is one of the two countries are NOT eligible to apply.

Application route: Applications submitted through any other means aside the French educational establishments will not be considered. Multiple nominations from establishments will also be disqualified.

Other Scholarships: Foreign students who are beneficiaries of other French Government scholarships at the time of the application are not eligible to apply. This includes scholarships that don’t have social security cover.

Field of Study: The scholarships are for Master’s course, including those taught in engineering school, and PhD courses. This scholarship does not include French Master’s courses that are run abroad because PhD programmes require that 75% of the course load is taken in France. Moreover, professional or apprenticeship training contracts do not apply to this scholarship program.

Eiffel Master Scholarship: Applicants who applied before and were rejected will not be considered whether or not the new application is submitted for a different field or by a different establishment.

Eiffel PhD Scholarship: If a candidate was previously nominated by an establishment at Master’s level, he or she can be nominated at the PhD level. However, those who have received the scholarship at the PhD level cannot receive another be awarded an Eiffel PhD Scholarship again. More so, applicants who applied before and were rejected will not be considered whether or not the new application is submitted for a different field or by a different establishment.

Language proficiency: Before establishments select non-French-speaking candidates, they must ensure that the candidate’s language skills are suitable for the relevant course they have applied for.

  • Application Instructions: APPLICATIONS FOR THE EIFFEL SCHOLARSHIPS ARE NOT ACCEPTED FROM APPLICANTS DIRECTLY. Applicants are required to submit their applications through the French Higher Education Institutions and they must have met the requirements before their applications are considered.

For applications through Campus France, the deadline is January 6 while applications through French Institutions must be submitted between November and December.

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (Switzerland)

The Swedish Institute awards scholarships to talented and qualified graduate students from developing countries who would like to pursue Master’s, doctoral or postdoctoral research in any recognised or public-funded universities in Sweden. This scholarship covers living expenses, tuition fee, some grant for travel expenses and insurance.

  • Participating Institutions: Any one of the 10 Swiss cantonal universities, the Swiss federal institute of technology or one of the public research and teaching institutes.

  • Award Value: An awardee receives a monthly payment that excludes tuition fees but includes air fare, health insurance, and housing allowance among other expenses. More information about the benefits accrued to an awardee is available on the official website.
  • Eligibility: The eligibility criteria are country specific and are available on the official website
  • Application Instructions: Applicants are required to visit the fact sheets on the official website for country-specific information like the eligibility criteria, deadlines, and application procedure. Once an applicant fulfils all the requirement, he or she is required to contact the diplomatic representative of the Swiss Government in his or her country of citizenship; where information on how to apply and documents to be supplied are given.

MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY GLOBAL UNVERSITIES

Gates Cambridge Scholarships (UK)

These scholarships are full-cost grants for taught and research-based graduate programmes offered to international students from countries all over the world who would like to enrol at the University of Cambridge for a full-time postgraduate degree. It covers all expenses related to the student’s programme at the university. These costs include the university fees, inbound visa fees, airfare, maintenance allowance, and some of the dependent’s allowance.

  • Participating Institutions: University of Cambridge, UK
  • Programme(s): Masters or PhD Degree
  • Deadline: October 11/December 6 (Annually)
  • Subject area: PhD, MLitt or MSc in a one-year postgraduate programme in any course taught at the University
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Approximately 95 awards every year
  • Award Value: An awardee of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship receives a grant that covers the cost of tuition, maintenance, and travelling among other expenses. In essence it covers all expenses related to studying at Cambridge. Other funds it may provide include discretionary funding like family allowance and academic development.
  • Eligibility: To apply for this scholarship, candidates may be citizens of any country other than the United Kingdom. They must also be applying to pursue a PhD (3-year research degree); an MSc or MLitt (2-year research degree), or a 1-year postgraduate course.
  • Application Instructions: Applicants are required to submit a graduate admission and funding application through the University’s Graduate Portal. The deadline for the Gates Cambridge application is October 11 for US citizens that are resident in the US and December 6 for other applicants that meet the eligibility requirements.

Rhodes Scholarships (UK)

The Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest and the most prestigious international scholarships in the world. Established in 1902 in Cecil Rhodes’ will, these scholarships are known to provide support and financial aid to outstanding international students from participating countries who would like to pursue a degree at the University of Oxford.  An awardee of the Rhodes Scholarship receives the monetary worth of university fees, health insurance, personal allowance, and a return ticket to his home country.

  • Deadline: July to October (Annually)
  • Subject area: Scholars are at liberty to pursue any full-time postgraduate programme at Oxford University with a few restrictions.

  • Award Value: This scholarship covers all academic fees, a personal allowance, an economy airfare to Oxford, and another economy ticket to the scholar’s home country at the end of the programme.

This scholarship is valid for 2 years and is always subject to satisfactory personal conduct and academic performance.

  • Eligibility: Eligible candidates must be from one of the following countries:

Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, China, Jamaica & the Commonwealth Caribbean, New Zealand, Germany, Israel, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Southern Africa (including South Africa, , Malawi, Namibia Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland), Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine (SJLP), United States, United Arab Emirates, West Africa  (from 2018), Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Residency and citizenship: Applicants must fulfil the residency and citizenship requirements of the constituency peculiar to them and through which they will be applying.

Age: The age limit also varies with constituencies and could be within the range of 18 and 28. You are required to check the age requirements set by your constituency.

Education: With Oxford’s competitive admission requirements, applicants must have earned or will earn by October, a good class of degree in a Bachelor’s programme. In some cases, as a guarantee that the applicant will perform excellently well in the proposed programme a First Class degree or its equivalent is requested. Some constituencies may also require that the undergraduate programme must have been taken in an institution within the constituency.

Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford (UK)

This scholarship fund is a prestigious graduate award scheme that offers about 140 new scholarships annually to eligible UK and international graduate applicants for degree-bearing subjects offered at the University of Oxford. These scholarships are awarded based on applicants’ potential and academic excellence. Each one covers the complete value of the college and tuition fees and a grant sufficient for the applicant’s living expenses.

  • Deadline: January 8/ January 19 (Annually)
  • Subject area: All graduate level degree-bearing courses are eligible for the scholarship program including part-time and full-time Master’s courses and DPhil courses.
  • Number of Scholarships offered: About 140 awards are given annually
  • Award Value: The Clarendon Scholarships are full scholarships and they are paid for the full length of the scholars’ study period. Scholars pursuing a full-time course are given generous annual grants as living allowance. This could be £14,553 or more while those on part-time courses get a support grant that covers their non-fee costs.
  • Eligibility: The Clarendon Scholarships are open to all students including international students. However, the potential and academic performance of an applicant is a major criterion for eligibility. This is why the focus is usually on students with outstanding academic performance.
  • Application Instructions: Applicants for full or part-time Master’s or DPhil courses at the University who apply by the deadline are usually considered for the Clarendon Scholarship immediately. This means that, although additional documents may be required for the scholarship, there is no separate application for the scholarship.

So it is important that you submit your admission application before the deadline if you wish to be considered for this scholarship.

Nottingham Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship for Research Excellence (UK)

The University of Nottingham scholarship offers are available to highly-talented international students who want to pursue an MPhil or PhD research program at the university. It covers the full cost of the awardee’s tuition.

Engineering research students are required to apply for the Dean of Engineering Research Scholarship for International Excellence.

  • Award Value: The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and is awarded every year for up to 3 years of the research programme provided the academic performance of the student is satisfactory.
  • Eligibility: Applicants:
  1. Must be classed as fee-paying international students
  2. Should already have an offer to pursue a full-time research programme (PhD or MPhil) at the University of Nottingham campus in any subject area except Engineering.
  • Application Instructions: Applying for and obtaining an offer to pursue a research programme at the University of Nottingham is a prerequisite to applying for this scholarship. And it must be received six weeks before the scholarship deadline for processing and confirmation before the scholarship application.

Monash University International Merit Scholarships (Australia)

The International Merit Scholarships are some of the scholarships offered by Monash University to outstanding international students who would like to pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at Monash University. It is valued at $10,000 paid for each year of a full-time study.

  • Participating Institutions: Monash University in Australia
  • Programme(s): Bachelor and Master’s Degree
  • Deadline: The deadline is based on the selection round which depends on the commencement of the programme. For instance, the deadlines for rounds 1 and 2 are 15 October and 15 November respectively for programs that starts in semester 1 or 2 of the following year, while the deadline of round 3 is 15 January for a program that begins in semester 1 or 2 of the current year. For programs that begin in semester 2 of the current year, rounds 3, 4, and 5 are the official selection rounds and the deadline for applying are 15 March, 15 April, and 15 May respectively.
  • Subject area: Any full-time undergraduate or postgraduate (coursework) degree excluding Master of Business Administration and Monash Pathway Programs or Doctor of Medicine and Bachelor of Medical Science
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Four scholarships are offered.
  • Award Value: A full value of course fees are paid every year as long as the minimum number of points required for the degree have been acquired (70% or above for each semester). This excludes accommodation and living costs.
  • Eligibility: International students from all countries can apply. A full Monash course offer for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree is also very important.
  • Application Instructions: A prerequisite to applying for this scholarship is an unconditional offer for a full-time Monash course. A separate application form is then obtained from the official website to apply for the scholarship.

Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships (Australia)

These scholarships provide partial tuition waivers for talented international students who wish to pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate program at Macquarie University (North Ryde campus). An awardee may receive up to AUD $10,000.

  • Award Value: The scholarship is awarded as a non-renewable grant valued at approximately AUD$10,000, which is used to cover all or part of the awardee’s tuition cost. The scholarship offers no support for expenses like airfares, living expenses, visa cost, or any other cost that may relates to the study programme or the awardee.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must:
  1. Not be citizens of Mongolia, New Zealand, Australia or an ASEAN or European country
  2. Have met the University’s English Language proficiency requirement for the proposed course of study and must have a full admission offer before the application deadline.
  3. Have earned a minimum of 90% for undergraduate applications and a minimum of 5.0 of 7.0 for postgraduate applications.
  4. Have applied for a study programme that is longer than a session
  5. Begin the study programme in the year and session indicated in the award letter (Commencement can’t be deferred)

They are to supply this number before they can submit the scholarship application form. The deadline for the February intake is January 31 and it is June 30 for the July intake.

Adelaide Scholarships International (Australia)

These scholarships are awarded by the University of Adelaide to attract highly-talented postgraduate students from any country of the world who wish to support the university’s research strength by enrolling for a research-based program. They include tuition fees for the research work, living expenses for the research period at the school, as well as the student’s health insurance.

  • Deadline: January 31/April 30
  • Subject area: Any Master’s degree by Research or Doctoral Research degree offered at University of Adelaide.
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Limited
  • Award Value: The scholarship award covers the cost of tuition, an annual living allowance, and an overseas student health cover (for award holders who have subclass 500 visas)

The duration of funding is 2 years for Master’s by Research programmes and 3 years for Doctoral research programmes with the possibility of an extension for doctoral programmes.

  • Eligibility:

Applicants are required to have earned the equivalent of an Australian First Class Honours degree from a 4-year programme with a major research project in his or her final year. The scholarship is awarded based on merit and doesn’t consider extracurricular activities.

They must not hold the equivalent of an Australian Research Doctorate Degree if they are applying for a Master’s by research programme or a research qualification higher than the equivalent of an Australian Master’s by Research degree.

Applicants who haven’t met the requirements of English language proficiency and/or are permanent residents and citizens of Australia are not eligible to apply.

University of Maastricht Scholarships for High Potential International Students (Netherlands)

These scholarships are offered by the University of Maastricht Scholarship Fund to encourage talented students from non-EEA countries to pursue a Master’s Programme at the University of Maastricht. This scholarship covers the student’s tuition fee, visa costs, living expenses, and insurance.

This scholarship award is valid for 13 months for a 1-year master’s programme, and 25 months for 2-year master’s programme.

  • Eligibility: The following requirements must be met before an applicant is considered for the scholarship:
  • Applicants must be citizens of non-EU/EEA countries and must be eligible to obtain a residence permit and an entry visa into the Netherlands.
  • Applicants must have submitted a course application to pursue an eligible full-time Master’s degree at Maastricht University.
  • He or she must be able to meet the requirements for admission into the proposed programme.
  • Applicants must not have participated in a primary, secondary, or higher education degree programme in Netherlands except they only participated in an exchange programme.

Leiden University Excellence Scholarships for International Students (Netherlands)

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme aka LExS will be suitable for you if you are looking to purse a masters at the Leiden University. It is awarded in one of these 3 ways: as a €10,000-grant for tuition only, as a €15,000 grant for tuition only, or as the equivalent of a total tuition in euros excluding the home fee.

  4. Except it a Master’s programme that is a prerequisite to another Master’s programme like the LL.M advanced masters, applicants who hold master’s degrees obtained from Leiden are not eligible for this scholarship.

Utrecht University Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)

The Utrecht University Excellence Scholarship provides outstanding prospective international students with scholarships that encourage them to pursue a Master’s programme in selected subject areas at the Utrecht University. The scholarship is either awarded as tuition fees or as the tuition fees and €11,000 as allowance for living expenses.

  • Award Value: The grant offered is not a full scholarship and it may be awarded as tuition fees and a stipend of 11,000 euros for living expenses or as a cost that simply covers tuition fees. You may choose to look for additional funding options to ensure that you are financially safe during your study period.

Depending on the programme, the scholarship may be awarded for 1 or 2 years. It could also be renewed in the 2nd year if the awardee meets the academic requirement to sustain the award.

Amsterdam Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)

The AES awards offers grants to highly talented students from countries outside the EU who wish to pursue an eligible Master’s programme at the University of Amsterdam. It has a value of €25,000 – a sum that covers both tuition and living expenses.

TU Delft Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)

The Delft University of Technology offers excellence-based scholarship awards to international students every year. One of its scholarships is the Justus and Louise van Effen scholarship which aims to provide financial support to international students who wish to pursue a programme at TU Delft. This scholarship is a full one that covers tuition fees and the student’s living expenses.

ENS International Selection Scholarships (France)

Annually, ENS offers scholarships to 30 promising and talented international students who would like to pursue a 2 or 3-year programme at ENS. Each awardee receives a monthly allowance of €1,000 and on-campus accommodation for the duration of the programme.

ETH Excellence Scholarships (Switzerland)

If you are looking to pursue a Master’s degree at ETH, then you should take advantage of these scholarships. The Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Programme (ESOP) offers international students a grant that covers study and living expenses at CHF 11,000 for each semester including a tuition waiver. The Master Scholarship Programme (MSP) provides a partial stipend of CHF 6,000 each semester for study and living expenses including a tuition waiver.

The Master Scholarship provides a partial stipend that covers study and living expenses to an extent and a tuition-fee waiver. The awardee’s department may also make an offer of 1,500 to 3,000 CHF every semester or make an offer of assistantship that begins from the 2nd semester of the master’s programme where he or she earns 600 CHF every month. The MSP requires some contribution from the awardee.

Both scholarships take effect from the day the awardee begins his or her programme and it lasts for the 3 or 4 months of the programme.
