The low tuition fees featured in Swiss Universities when compared to the tuition fees of other European countries makes Switzerland attractive to most international students who would like to pursue an academic programme in Europe.  Moreover, there are Swiss scholarships offered to international students to help them get the education they desire.

SWISS GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Swiss Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Students

Annually, the Swiss government awards excellence scholarships to foster research cooperation and international exchange between Switzerland and over 180 countries of the world. The research-based scholarship is provided to post-graduate researchers in any subject area who hold a minimum of a Master’s degree and will like to pursue a doctoral or postdoctoral programme. It covers the monthly dues (excluding tuition fees), housing allowance, and health insurance.

  • Participating Institutions: Any one of the 10 Swiss cantonal universities, the Swiss federal institute of technology or one of the public research and teaching institutes.
  • Programme(s): PhD/Postdoctoral Degree
  • Deadline: September to December (varies)
  • Subject area: Research, Doctoral, or Postdoctoral Programme in any field of study
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Not specified
  • Award Value: An awardee receives a monthly payment that excludes tuition fees but includes air fare, health insurance, and housing allowance among other expenses. More information about the benefits accrued to an awardee is available on the official website.
  • Eligibility: The eligibility criteria are country specific and are available on the official website
  • Application Instructions: Applicants are required to visit the fact sheets on the official website for country-specific information like the eligibility criteria, deadlines, and application procedure. Once an applicant fulfils all the requirement, he or she is required to contact the diplomatic representative of the Swiss Government in his or her country of citizenship; where information on how to apply and documents to be supplied are given.

SWISS UNIVERSITIES THAT OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

ETH Excellence Scholarships

ETH Zurich provides funding for outstanding international students seeking to pursue a master’s degree at the institution through 2 scholarship programs. The Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Programme (ESOP) covers the full tuition fee and the student’s living expenses. The Master Scholarship Programme (MSP) offers students partial stipend and assistantship during their academic stay at ETH.

  • Participating Institutions: ETH Zurich
  • Programme(s): Master’s Degree
  • Deadline: December 15 (Annually)
  • Subject area: Any eligible Master’s programme offered at the University.
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Depends on how much funds are available.
  • Award Value: The Excellence Scholarship provides a grant that covers study and living expenses at 11,000 CHF for every semester and a tuition-fee waiver.

The Master Scholarship provides a partial stipend that covers study and living expenses to an extent and a tuition-fee waiver. The awardee’s department may also make an offer of 1,500 to 3,000 CHF every semester or make an offer of assistantship that begins from the 2nd semester of the master’s programme where he or she earns 600 CHF every month. The MSP requires some contribution from the awardee.

Both scholarships take effect from the day the awardee begins his or her programme and it lasts for the 3 or 4 months of the programme.

  • Eligibility: Applications are open to international students and students from ETH or other universities and colleges who wish to pursue a Master’s programme at ETH. Applicants must be in the top 10% of their graduating class to be considered for the scholarships.
  • Application Instructions: You can apply for the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme or the Master Scholarship Programme if you apply for a Master’s programme at the University simultaneously or if you are currently enrolled for a Bachelor’s programme and wish to continue with a Master’s Programme consecutively.

University of Lausanne Master’s Grants for Foreign Students

If you are an international student and would like to pursue a Master’s programme at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland then you should take advantage of the UNIL Master’s Grant. A beneficiary of this grant receives CHF 1,600 every month for a duration within the minimum period of the programme, which is usually between September 15 and July 15.

  • Participating Institutions: University of Lausanne
  • Programme(s): Master’s Degree
  • Deadline: November 1 (Annually)
  • Subject area: Any master’s programme offered at UNIL excluding these:
  • Master of Education
  • Masters from the School of Medicine
  • Master of Law from the Universities of Lausanne and Zurich
  • Master of criminal Law, magistracy specialism
  • All MASs (PhD programmes)

International and comparative Law and Legal theory are the only 2 specializations for Masters of Law that are eligible for the scholarship

  • Number of Scholarships offered: Approximately 10
  • Award Value: The scholarship is awarded as a monthly grant of CHF 1,600 from September 15 to July 15 within the duration of the programme.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must:
  1. Have obtained a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a foreign university before applying for a master’s programme at University of Lausanne
  2. Have excellent and outstanding academic results
  3. Have a B2 (according to the European Language Portfolio Global Scale) in English or French based on the language in which the chosen Master’s course is taught.
  4. Not have registered with UNIL in the past
  5. Pay an administration fee of CHF 200.
  • Application Instructions: The application to register at UNIL doubles as the application for Master’s scholarship and an application for admission into a Master’s programme; which must be sent by post to UNIL’s Social Affairs and Student Mobility Service (SASME) before November 1.

EPFL Excellence Fellowships

Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) attracts international students with excellent academic records by offering them a few fellowships. Those applying for a Master’s at EPL are also eligible. Awardees receive a financial package of CHF 16,000 for every academic year including a room reservation in a students’ accommodation.

  • Participating Institutions: École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland
  • Programme(s): Master’s Degree
  • Deadline: January 15/April 15
  • Subject area: Any eligible Master’s programme offered at EPL
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Limited
  • Award Value: External applicants receive a grant of CHF 16,000 for each academic session.
  • Eligibility: All students can apply for this scholarship as long as they have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university. The section criterion is usually candidates’ academic records.
  • Application Instructions: While applying for the master’s programme, it is important that you tick the box that showing that you wish to have your profile considered for the fellowship. If you would need a visa to study in Switzerland, then we’ll advise you to apply before the January deadline.

University of Geneva Excellence Master Fellowships

There are scholarships offered by University of Geneva’s Faculty of Science in collaboration with other aimed at sponsoring highly talented students who wish to pursue a Master’s of Science programme in any subject area offered by the Faculty. A recipient of this fellowship gets a grant within the range of CHF 10,000 and CHF 15,000 for every academic year.

  • Participating Institutions: University of Geneva
  • Programme(s): Master’s Degree
  • Deadline: March 15
  • Subject area: Masters of Science Programme in Astronomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Computer Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Physics offered by the Faculty of Science.
  • Number of Scholarships offered: Not specified
  • Award Value: The scholarship is valued at CHF 15,000 every year for an academic year. It could be extended to cover the length of a regular Master’s course as long as the awardee is able to meet up with the academic requirements of the award renewal.
  • Eligibility: This scholarship is open to all students who graduated in the top 10% of their Bachelor’s degree class. The selection is based on excellence.
  • Application Instructions: Application forms and supporting documents should be submitted in a PDF format and sent via email to the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences before March 15.

IMD MBA Scholarships

There are scholarships programs offered by IMD to international students with the value of each of these scholarships falling within a range of CHF 25,000 and CHF 50,000. Here are some of the scholarships:

Jim Ellert MBA Scholarship at IMD

The Jim Ellert MBA Scholarships are offered to international students from Africa, South-Eastern Asian Peninsula and Central and Eastern Europe who want to pursue an MBA programme at IMD.

  • Deadline: 30 September (Annual)
  • Subject area: Business Administration
  • Number of Scholarships offered: One
  • Award Value: CHF 20,000
  • Eligibility: This offer is available to international students from the regions of Africa, South-Eastern Asian Peninsula and Central and Eastern Europe. They must also demonstrate financial need and must have applied for the full-time MBA program at IMD.
  • Application Instructions: Applicants are required to submit a 500-word essay on the topic “Why I Would Like to do An MBA at IMD”. The MBA Financial Aid Application Form must be submitted along with the essay by September 30.

IMD MBA Future Leaders Scholarships

The IMD MBA Future Leaders Scholarships are available to candidates who are already pursuing an MBA at IMD and have proven leadership record so far.

  • Subject area: Business Administration
  • Number of Scholarships offered: 3 Scholarships each year
  • Award Value: CHF 30,000
  • Eligibility: Students from any country in the world are free to apply. However, they must have demonstrated excellent leadership skills till the time of the application. Each applicant is also required to submit a 750-word essay on the topic: “It has been said that business requires flexibility to be responsive, but also commitment to a recognized set of values. Discuss using your personal and professional experience.”
  • Application Instructions: The completed scholarship application must be submitted with the 750-word essay before September 30.

IMD MBA Class Scholarship for Emerging Markets

IMD is particular about emerging markets and so it offers new scholarships to young leaders from developing countries who would like to earn an MBA degree at IMD.

Nestle MBA Scholarships for Women from Developing Countries

In1997, a group of participants in IMD’s MBA program wanted to help and encourage women to go for the MBA and so they started the Nestle Scholarship for Women.

  • Subject area: Master’s in Business Administration
  • Number of Scholarships offered: One
  • Award Value: CHF 20,000
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be women – preferably those from developing countries. Women employed at Nestle or its subsidiaries are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • Application Instructions: Apart from the completed MBA Financial Aid Form, you are also required to submit a 750-word essay on the topic: “Many have argued that greater diversity in the top management team of an organization is good for profits and customers. What would you recommend as other ways to achieve greater diversity?”

The application including the essay must be submitted before September 30.
